5-6 May, 2018
Piwnica Kany, 4/5 św. Piotra i Pawła Square, Szczecin
We invite you to another adventure with the Traveling Academy of Traditional Dance. It will take place during the long May weekend (ie 1-3 May). This time, we will look at different ways of dancing not only in the villages but also in cities in the interwar period, as well as post-war period.
The dancings under the open sky, on the carefully arranged Roofs, were a permanent part of the cultural landscape not only of Warsaw, Lublin or Krakow but also - and perhaps most of all - Szczecin, Międzyzdroje, Darłówek and other coastal cities and towns. The bands that came to Westpomeranian Region from different sides were playing not only familiar polka or oberek but also imported, rumors, sentimental tango and waltzes heard on the radio or cinema.
The workshop will be conducted by Piotr Zgorzelski - an ethnologist, dancer, actor and culture animator who is known in Szczecin for over 25 years. He has been disseminating, promoting and teaching Polish traditional dances in non-static forms for almost 25 years. He is the author of online dance lessons posted on the YouTube channel - Taniec Tradycyjnia. Together with IMiT he co-created the website www.taniec.edu.pl.
He gained his experience by learning directly from rural dancers as well as analyzing available archival sources, developing his own curriculum, taking into account contemporary predispositions and skills of the generation devoid of lively contact with folk music. He runs the Traditional Dance Academy which includes dance and dance workshops in Poland and around the world.
He conducts workshops of Polish traditional dances in non-physical forms in the country and abroad. He is a co-founder of the Warsaw "Dom Tańca" Association (1994).
