Police is situated on Wkrzańska Plain, approx. 16 km north from Szczecin. Rivers, such as Oder (with the sea harbour on the left bank at its mouth), Łarpia (with a small sailing marina) and Gunica (with a fishing pier in Jasienica) are flowing through the town.
Police is surrounded by Wkrzańska Primeval Forests. You can get from Szczecin to Police taking province road no. 115, which near Tanowo is connected with province road no. 114. Along Tanowska Street, starting from the railway crossing towards Głębokie Lake, through Trzeszczyn, Tanowo and Pilchowo there is a 14-km long cycling trail. Railway line no. 406 goes through the town connecting Szczecin Główny and Trzebież, which is currently operating only in the field of freight traffic. There is also a fairway Szczecin-Świnoujście, along which the Police harbour is located. The town is well-connected with Szczecin. You can get there by bus no. 101, 102, 103, 106 and 107, by express line A or F or night line no. 524 and 526. Moreover, a private carrier Ever-Trans travels towards Nowe Warpno through Trzebież, while to Trzebież you can get by the Samorządowa Line buses. In summer between Police and Trzebież also the Plażowa Line is operating. Various touristic walking and cycling trails go through Police. The most popular and attractive trails are: the yellow walking Police Trail, the red walking Ścieżkami Dzików Trail [Boars’ Paths], the green walking Ornitologów Trail [Ornithologists’ Trail] and the red cycling trail of Wkrzańska Primeval Forest.
The surface area of Police is 37.31 km2. In the town there are headquarters of local government authorities of Police County and of the urban-rural municipality. The beginnings of Police reach back to the 12th century, when the resettlement process started and the residents moved closer to the current market square. In the 2nd half of the 13th century (1260) thanks to the West Pomerania duke Barnim I Police was granted municipal rights. For many years the town was subject to Szczecin which is located nearby. In the 12th and the 13th small river fishing harbours in – among others - Police, Szczecin, Trzebież and Nowe Warpno were built in the area and they constitutes an important element of the local economy. Both the Police harbour and a small shipyard for fishing boats functioned here up until the end of the 2nd World War. In the 20’s of the 19th century Police a shipping connection with Szczecin was established. Then a railway line was activated which led to Szczecin through Police, and then Jasienica and Trzebież. Before the outbreak of the 2nd World War in Police the construction works of a factory producing fuel (in German Hydrierwerke Pölitz AG) for the German army were commenced, among others for the Luftwaffe. At that time there were camps in the town in which several dozen prisoners from different European countries were doing slave labour, especially producing synthetic fuel. The factory was operating until 1945. Numerous remains after the factory, such as a coal elevator, ground raid bunkers and a structure of the factory hall have been preserved up until now. Just after the end of the war Police were not returned to Poland, as the Police Enclave was created here and it was subject to the Soviet army. The Enclave functioned until October 1946. It was an area temporarily excluded from Polish administration, and its purpose was to secure and deliver to the USSR the remains of the factory producing synthetic fuel. The existence of this area significantly impacted the delay of the post-war reconstruction works and development of the town. It is worth mentioning that as a result of the Civil War in Greece in the 50’s of the 20th century in the town state orphanages and special educational centres for refugees from Greece and Macedonia were created. That is why in Police there is the largest population of people with Greek origins in Poland. A singer Helena Dzoka (Tzoka), known as Eleni, is connected with Police. An important event in the post-war history of the town was the decision to build a chemical conglomerate producing fertilizers in Police. Zakłady Chemiczne [Chemical Plant] in Police started to operate at the end of the 60’s of the 20th century. In connection with this investment new residential estates with the entire infrastructure started to emerge and it impacted the development of the entire municipality. From August 2011 Zakłady Chemiczne Police S.A. constitutes a part of Grupa Azoty Tarnów and it is one of the largest chemical plants in Poland. In the town there are numerous attractive and historic buildings, such as a Gothic chapel at Chrobrego Square, which constitutes remains after the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 13th century. The appearance of the Square has also been changed recently and currently it constitutes a huge attraction of the old town. One of the most important monuments in Police is also the church under invocation of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Staromiejski Park next to the church in Stare Police - Police Lapidary is located. It is a memorial for the pre-war residents of Police and the surrounding areas. At the edge of the park opposite the church there is an unused church cemetery. It is also worth paying attention to the previously mentioned factory of synthetic fuel, or its remains which remind of the tragic history of people performing slave labour for the German Third Reich during the war. In Police Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Ziemi Polickiej ''SKARB'' [The Association of Friends of the Police Land], which takes care of the factory area and the museum, as well as organizes trips on the ruins of the factory. An interesting element of the landscape in Police includes buildings in Jasienica, a district of Police. There is a beautiful parish church under invocation of St. Peter and Paul, as well as ruins of the Augustinian monastery, which constitute an amazing example of medieval architecture. Police are called a green municipality due to its location near the forests of Wkrzańska Primeval Forest, one of the most impressive forests in Poland. Moreover, within the municipality several thousand trees and bushes were planted and they constitute one of the elements of protection from the adverse effects of the Chemical Plant. There are a lot of green areas. In the Old Town there is the Staromiejski Park in the centre of which there is the previously mentioned Police Lapidary. In the new part of the town between Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego and kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego Streets there is the Solidarności Park. Nearby at Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego Street there is also John Paul II Square on which a very interesting monument of the Polish Pope was placed. At the edge of the Square just next to the Pionierów Police Roundabout there is a monument of Our Lady of Fatima. This beautifully managed green area with alleys constitutes a popular place to go for a walk and to meet. Another green area is the Solidarności Park, in which there are various interesting species of bushes and majestic trees. Near the park there is another church in Police – it is relatively new, as it was built in the 90’s of the 20th century – the church under invocation of St. Casimir the Prince. Apart from catholic churches there is also a Pentecostal church and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. In Police the cultural life is focused around the Municipal Cultural Centre located at Siedlecka Street, right next to the District Police Headquarters. In the Municipal Cultural Centre there is a large cinema-theatre hall, where numerous classes in the field of theatre, dance, singing, visual arts and photography, etc. are held. Various cultural events of the town and the municipality are organized here to which different guests are invited, including Polish celebrities involved in music and stand-up. Annually an event Międzynarodowe Dni Polic – Dni Chemika [International Days of Police – Days of Chemik] is organized. At Wojska Polskiego Street, in the so called Stare Police there is the Public Library of Maria Skłodowska-Curie. Furthermore, local media, such as Telewizja Kablowa Police [Police Cable Television], Magazyn Policki [Police Magazine], Wieści Polickie (a newspaper) and websites, such as Wirtualne Police, Dziennik Policki and others function actively. In Police there are also several sports clubs, including: Chemik Police Football Club, playing in the 3rd league in the Baltic Group. Recently Chemik Police Women’s Volleyball Club has been the most successful and it plays in the Orlen League. In the season of 2013/2014 it was the champion of Poland and won the Polish Cup. There is a good accommodation base in the town, within the framework of which Wróblewskiego Hotel Dobosz is the most popular one in the region. There are also many catering facilities, pubs and restaurants offering Polish and international cuisine. The District Police, Municipal Police, State Fire Service, District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, Regional Ambulance Station, Police branch, as well as several branches of Independent Public Hospital of Tadeusz Sokołowski in Szczecin and various clinics are all located in Police. The residents have access to night and emergency health care. In the town there is a nursery, private toddlers’ clubs, several kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools. There are four Biedronka supermarkets, one Netto supermarket, one Intermarche and Lidl, as well as many other commercial and service points. Also Jysk, Pepco and Rossmann have their branches in the town. There is also a swimming pool which functions as a part of the Complex of Schools of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, and it can be publically used. In the school building there is also a modern entertainment and sports hall, an open-air gym and in winter also an ice-skating rink. Near Primary School no. 8 of John Paul II there is a sports complex consisting of: a skate park, a football pitch, a multi-functional pitch and an athletics track. Police is surrounded with interesting and picturesque villages and settlements with an interesting and surprising history.
