Kamień Pomorski, the seat of the commune and poviat, a town in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, situated in a very picturesque area on the Kamieński Lagoon, 8 km from the Baltic Sea. Provincial road No. 107 runs here, connecting with the international route E-65 (national road No. 3) and a branch of the Szczecin-Świnoujście railway line. Direct connection with the sea is provided by the mouth of the Oder River, the Dziwna River. The airport in Goleniów is only 50 km away from there. A similar distance separates the city from the ferry terminal in Świnoujście. The area of the commune - 208.2 square kilometers - is inhabited by nearly 15 thousand people, of which less than 9 thousand live in the city itself. The name of the city comes from a huge erratic boulder lying in the waters of the Kamień Lagoon on the northern shore of the nearby Chrząszczewska Island. The boulder, called "royal", is 20 m in circumference. It rises above the water level to a height of approx. 3 m. It was transported by the Pleistocene glacier from Scandinavia approx. 10 thousand years ago. The term "royal" refers to the legendary event of 1121, when perhaps from this place the Polish ruler - Bolesław the Wrymouth - controlled the Pomeranian fleet.
