Archcathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle is in the center of Szczecin, at Świętego Jakuba Street, near the Szczecin Boulevards, opposite the Campanile hotel.
The beginnings of the Szczecin cathedral should be linked to the year 1187, when there was a wooden church in this place. Most likely, the temple was founded by the Bamberg bourgeoisie, Beringer, to evangelize Pomerania more quickly. In the 13th century, the building had the form of a gothic three-nave basilica, without buttresses. Over time, the aisles were raised, thus creating a hall. In 1534, the temple passed into the hands of the supporters of the Reformation. After a fire in the 17th century, the church was rebuilt into a baroque style. In 1983, the church was given the rank of a minor basilica. In 2008, the tower was rebuilt to restore its original silhouette, it was topped with a soaring cupola with viewpoints. In 2010, an 18-meter-long bell was installed on the roof of the cathedral. After the reconstruction of the tower, the cathedral measures 110.18 meters and is the second tallest building in Szczecin and the second tallest temple in Poland, right after the basilica in Licheń. The temple is located on the European Route of Brick Gothic.
Inside, the most important place is the chancel with an altar table, decorated with brass bas-reliefs. There is also a triptych from a compilation of several altars with reliefs from the 14th century and a beautiful crucifix, dated at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. There are as many as 19 chapels in the cathedral, among them the Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa with a neo-Gothic interior and an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Baptismal Chapel with a triptych from the 1620s and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with a valuable altar with a triptych from the end of the 14th century. It is worth mentioning the organ in the cathedral, it is an instrument made to order in 2008. They were designed so that the impressive body of the instrument does not obscure the 30 m2 stained glass behind the organ. The instrument is 10 meters high and weighs 36 tons. It has 66 voices and consists of 4,743 pipes ranging from 11 millimeters to 10 meters high.
